Meet Lauren Wisdom

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved to write. As a child, I used to write my own stories and draw my matching illustrations. For example, I wrote a story about a figure skater and somehow, a lizard was involved. I could not tell you how the two correlated, so of course it did not make any sense. I was just a child.

Then, when I got into high school, I wrote stories that I submitted for awards. One story was about an elderly couple who I saw sitting in Starbucks where the husband was reading to his wife. That story won second place in the descriptive sketch category at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Literary Festival where all of the schools in our conference were competing. The other story I wrote was about the last stages of my cat’s life before he passed away. However, the twist to that story is I wrote it in my cat’s perspective instead of my own. That story won second place in the short story category.

Aside from my passion for writing, I grew up watching the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs play a role in what helped me start to play softball. After watching a countless number of their games, I started to understand the game more each time. Now, it is my favorite sport to watch and have conversations about with others. I watched Kelly Crull, a sportscaster and television personality, when she was with the Cubs organization and I made jokes to my family about how I was going to steal her job one day.

I came into Wartburg wanting to be a sports anchor or a play-by-play announcer/color commentator. But after taking a variety of classes here, I realized that I want to work closely with a social media team for a Major League Baseball team, especially the Cubs. That way, I could still incorporate my strong writing skills as I have tuned my talents by writing for the Wartburg Trumpet while also adding creativity to the social media content.

Leading Simplex Stories as the project manager has allowed me to work with a hardworking group of gifted individuals while showcasing my own skills and learning to establish a sense of leadership in which I have not had many chances to do so. This position requires me to be a jack-of-all trades. Whether it is writing, videography, graphic design, photography, and social media, I look over everything and anything to make edits and keep tasks on track. I have a good eye for judgement when it comes to overall design and a good idea of what flows when it comes to sentence structure.

Simplex Stories has put so much time into our documentary about Maria Pearson as well as behind the scenes. I am so excited for everyone to see what we came up with on April 19!
